April 29, 2005 New Reconciling in Christ video, "It's About Being Church," released for purchaseThanks to grants from the Carpenter Foundation, Edina Community Lutheran and a generous donation from allies, the film, RIC: It's About Being Church has been completed and released for purchase. The film features the stories of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and allied Lutherans and their experiences with the Reconciling in Christ Program. Participants include pastors, lay persons, and two ELCA Bishops. The film also documents recommended steps in the RIC process and several resources including the RIC Ministry Planner. This video provides an excellent introduction for individuals, congregations, and organizations considering coming out of the closet about welcoming people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. It is also a great re-fresher for churches wishing to renew their interest in RIC. The title "RIC: It's About Being Church" comes from the Rev Barbara Lundblad, who is featured in the video. Filming took place primarily during Gather Us In at Augsburg College, the Reading, PA RIC Training, and the September 2004 LC/NA board meeting. Bishop Paul Landahl (Metro Chicago Synod, ELCA) and Bishop Robert Rimbo (Southeast Michigan Synod) give messages of experience of and support for the RIC program. The film also includes two Lutheran teenagers who tell their stories, one of coming out to his youth group, and one of his struggle with the church and acceptance of his gay friends. The film was first shown in its entirety at the Houston RIC Training in January. "You could have heard a pin drop," said Emily Eastwood, executive producer of the project. "Before the film had even finished, one ally from central Texas had made his way over to where I was seated. He had tears in his eyes as he whispered, 'I need this film, and I need it now.' I gave him the only copy I had with me." The video was produced by award winning filmmakers, Dawn Mikkelson and Jamie Lee of Aquaries Media, who also filmed and produced This Obedience, the story of the ordination of Pastor Anita Hill and the events that followed. The video is available through the LC/NA website, www.lcna.org, click on Order Resources and Multi-media. Cost is $12.00 plus shipping. The video is under 30 minutes in length and is perfect for Sunday morning adult education classes. |
