Happy International Pronouns Day!

A small word can make a big difference in helping someone feel seen, respected, and welcomed.

Pronouns are the words we use to refer to someone, such as she/her, he/him, they/them, or other pronouns. Using someone’s correct pronouns is a simple but meaningful way to honor who they are and affirm their dignity.

At ReconcilingWorks, we believe that hospitality is more than opening our doors. It is about creating communities where every person is recognized, respected, and celebrated as God’s beloved.

Here are a few ways to practice pronoun hospitality:

  1. Share your pronouns when introducing yourself, creating space for others to share theirs if they choose.
  2. Include optional pronoun fields on registration forms and offer pronoun stickers or space on name tags.
  3. Never assume someone’s pronouns based on their name, appearance, or how they express themselves.
  4. If you make a mistake, briefly apologize, correct yourself, and keep going.
  5. Remember that sharing pronouns is always a personal choice. No one should feel pressured to share before they are ready or feel safe.

Pronouns are not simply about getting words right. They are about getting relationships right.

As people of faith, we are called to love our neighbors with intention, compassion, and care. Respecting someone’s pronouns is one way we can put that love into action.

May our congregations and communities be places where people of all gender identities and expressions are not only welcomed but fully included, celebrated, and empowered to flourish.

Because everyone deserves to be called by the words that honor who they are.
