LGBTQIA+ Icon: Sylvia Rivera

LGBTQIA+ Icon Sylvia Rivera (American gay liberation and gay rights activist)

“We have to be visible. We are not ashamed of who we are.”

” I have been beaten. I have had my nose broken. I have been thrown in jail. I have lost my job. I have lost my apartment for gay liberation and you all treat me this way?… I do not believe in a revolution, but you all do. I believe in the gay power. I believe in us getting our rights, or else I would not be out there fighting for our rights.”

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) month. This month is a time of celebration, but also recognition of those who have participated in the journey toward equality, justice, and the freedom to love without fear. Each day of this month we will be spotlighting one of the people who has taken a stand in the struggle toward inclusion and acceptance for all.
